Ancient Olympic Write for the US – The Olympic Games are named after Mount Olympus. Still, they were held in the rural reserve of Olympia, in the western Peloponnese region of Greece.
It was a sacred area featuring picturesque olive tree plantations and a giant statue of the god Zeus. By the 2nd century B.C., the central court held about 45,000 people in tents around the building.
The Ancient Olympic Games and Other Sports
The ancient Olympic Games, held every four years in Olympia in honor of the god Zeus, have been celebrated for over a millennium and inspired modern competition. Surviving inscriptions and literary sources list the names of about eight hundred ancient Olympic champions; The first recorded victor was Coropius of Elis, who won the stadium (foot) in 776 BC.
By the sixth century B.C., the Panhellenic Games—of Pan (all) and Hellenikos (Greek)—were held at Delphi, Nemea, and Isthmia and drew athletes from all over the Greek world. Several local festivals, including the Panathinaea in Athens, are modeled after these four games.
The Religious Origins of the Olympic Games
There is some historical disagreement about the cause of the ancient Olympic Games.
One theory is that it was a festival in honor of Zeus. This will help explain why it was named after Mount Olympus – where the Greek gods were said to have lived.
However, some historians believe the ancient Olympic Games were funeral games held in honor of deceased local heroes.
This is quite reasonable, given that sporting events were often associated with funeral rites.
During the festival, many bulls were sacrificed in honor of Zeus. After a small part of each animal had been burned for the Lord, the people consumed the rest of the meat in a great banquet.
Who can Participate?
The ancient Olympic Games were open to all free male Greek citizens, regardless of social standing. Even numerous emperors took part.
Women Were not Allowed to Compete.
However, there was a loophole in this rule. In chariot racing, horse owners were declared Olympic champions, not riders.
Everyone had access to horses, and Kyniska, the daughter of King Archidamos of Sparta, won the first Olympic competition for women in antiquity. Her four horses won the Olympics in 396 BC and 392 BC.
A separate festival called the Heraean Games, dedicated to the goddess and wife of Zeus, Hera, was created for women.
Also held at Olympia, these games featured young girls competing in a track on a track one-sixth shorter than the men’s.
