Approvals on Vaccines

While we await emergency approval for more vaccines to alleviate limited primary care, 60% of US pharmacies are preparing or administering the COVID-19 vaccine. About 21 million healthcare workers and 3 million long-term care residents are eligible for the first vaccines.

The Walgreens and CVS retail pharmacies offer the first phase of vaccines in long-term care facilities. However, they also plan when supply will catch up with demand, and more people will have access to COVID-19 vaccines through their stores. The vaccine will initially be available to a limited number of people through pharmacies and health centers. Please check below for more information on each.

Pharmacy

From independent pharmacies to regional/national chains, pharmacies and supermarkets across the country have partnered with HHS to provide the vaccine. You begin by administering the vaccine to healthcare workers and residents, and employees of long-term care facilities. (See below for the three phases of initial vaccine introduction.)

Albertsons: Albertsons anticipates that the vaccine will be available in some locations to select populations when it is first known and eventually in all areas. You can sign up for the latest vaccine information on their website.

CVS: The CVS stores will add the COVID-19 vaccine to their planning tool as soon as it becomes available. The device requires you to plan both the first injection and the follow-up vaccine.

H-E-B: Texas-based H-E-B is prepared to follow CDC’s vaccine distribution plan.
Hy-Vee: Hy-Vee plans to hire 1,000 licensed pharmaceutical technicians for its 270 pharmacies. The new hires will provide vaccine assistance to clients in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

According to the store’s website, Rite Aid locations are primed and ready to administer the vaccine.

Target: Target employees and customers can receive the vaccine at store pharmacies as soon as it is available to the public, according to the Target website.

Healthcare workers and residents and long-term care workers, possibly the most vulnerable populations, can expect to come first for the vaccine. Vaccination-ready facilities include Brookdale Senior Living and Banner Health.

Brookdale Senior Housing

Brookdale worked with CVS Health to deliver 40,000 vaccines to their communities in 39 states in just over four weeks. Older residents and workers are vaccinated in 500 of Brookdale’s 700 parishes.

“Our residents are participating in large numbers because they recognize the importance of the vaccine,” Lucinda “Cindy” Baier, Brookdale president and CEO, said in a statement. “The seniors we serve from the beginning of lives in eradicating diseases like whooping cough and smallpox and now have the opportunity to lead us again by getting vaccinated against COVID-19.”

Banner health

Banner Health sells vaccines at various locations. The practical health system asks people to contact their state and county health authorities to determine what stage of vaccination they are in.

Those who qualify for a vaccine are given links or phone numbers to schedule appointments at different locations. Banner Health asks for your patience, as arrangements can be booked quickly. Banner Health has facilities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Community health centers

Starting February 15, the Biden government will ship COVID-19 vaccines to federally funded community health centers to reach people in underserved areas. However, the first shipment of 1 million cans will go to 250 state-rated health centers in the coming weeks.

More than 13,000 community health centers provide preventive and primary care services to nearly 30 million people nationwide on a sliding fee scale. Also, more than half of the patients treated are from racial or ethnic minorities, and two-thirds live below the state poverty line, the White House said. COVID-19 Vaccines Available at Select CVS Pharmacy Locations

At select CVS pharmacy locations, vaccines are currently only available to priority populations, as determined by the state and federal governments. Once vaccines are open to the general public, we expect to vaccinate up to 20-25 million vaccines per month at CVS pharmacies across the country, provided adequate supplies are available.

Eligible customers can now schedule their vaccinations, both the first shot and the required second dose, on cvs.com or through the CVS app.

As of February 16, we have administered more than 3 million doses of vaccines to patients and staff at more than 40,000 long-term care facilities nationwide. However, we have completed the first doses of vaccine administration at all skilled nursing facilities and will terminate the second doses as planned by the end of the month.
